Indian Cricket History: man's and women's Cricket journey

Indian cricket history stretches back more than 300 years, starting from when some sailors played this game at a beach in Gujarat and eventually appealing to the billions of huge fan base of India and two World Cup winning Indian teams. The following guide takes a look at all that, covering the history of how the men’s team transformed into the world dominating force from a mere curiosity of colonial times as well as that of women’s cricket in India.

HISTORICAL ROOTS

THE ORIGINS OF CRICKET IN INDIA

ARRIVAL OF CRICKET DURING BRITISH RULE

C. 1721

Cricket was introduced in India with English sailors from the East India Company. To begin with, they played an early match at Cambay (present day Khambhat) in Gujarat. For over a century the sport continued to be largely a colonial pastime, played by British soldiers, merchants and officials in port cities. Indian communities turned cricket from an imported curiosity into something the nation would eventually make its own.

FORMATION OF LOCAL CRICKET CLUBS

1848–1911

The Parsi community in Bombay founded the Oriental Cricket Club in 1848, the first Indian run cricket club, followed by the Young Zoroastrian Club in 1850. The Parsis played their first match against the European only Bombay Gymkhana in 1877, and by 1892 that fixture had become an official annual contest, later expanding into the Bombay Triangular, then Quadrangular, then Pentangular tournaments as Hindu, Muslim and “Rest” teams joined in. Parsi sides toured England in 1886 and 1888, and by 1911 India sent its first genuinely representative team abroad, captained by the Maharaja of Patiala.

THE MEN'S LEGACY

GROWTH OF INDIAN MEN'S CRICKET

INDIA’S FIRST TEST MATCH

1932

India played its first Test match from June 25–28, 1932, at Lord’s, under captain C.K. Nayudu. England won by 158 runs (259 and 275/8 declared against India’s 189 and 187), a result that reflected how new the Indian side still was to the format. The debut however mattered less for the scoreline than for what it confirmed: India now had a seat at Test cricket’s top table.

BUILDING A COMPETITIVE
TEAM

1934 onward

The Ranji Trophy commenced in 1934, when its first match was held that November and named after K.S. Ranjitsinhji. The trophy was sponsored by the Maharaja of Patiala, Bhupinder Singh. This was the missing ingredient for Indian cricket to have a domestic system that would feed into the national team. The pace of development intensified after the country won its independence and state bodies established their own system of selection through performance in the Ranji Trophy, which continues to this day.

FIRST MAJOR
INTERNATIONAL SUCCESS

1967–68

The first overseas Test series victory by an Indian team was in New Zealand when they managed a 3–1 series win over the hosts in four games played under the leadership of the captain, Mansoor Ali Khan Pataudi, known as Tiger Pataudi. This marked the end of a prolonged period where Indian teams performed very poorly overseas and provided clear evidence that the Indian cricket team was capable of winning overseas Test matches.

THE TURNING POINT

THE 1983 WORLD CUP VICTORY

KAPIL DEV'S LEADERSHIP

Tournament Journey: Arriving as long shots, India won 6 of 8 matches before bowling out two time champions West Indies for 140 to defend a modest 183 at Lord's.

Key Performances: Kapil Dev's unyielding 175* against Zimbabwe pulled India back from 17/5, capping a campaign where he produced 303 runs and 12 wickets.

Future of Indian Cricket

THE FINAL WORD

A LEGACY REIMAGINED

From a single match played by sailors in Gujarat to two World Cup winning national teams, the evolution of Indian cricket has been anything but linear. The route of the men’s side saw them go through a tough beginning in the Test arena, followed by the milestone victory in 1983 and the golden generation which made India the hub of finances in the sport.

On the other hand, while it took longer for the female side to get their act together, the BCCI merging in 2006, equal pay in 2022, and the launch of the WPL in 2023 have nearly leveled the playing field in less than two decades.
